We had only been living on the opal fields of Opalton, Queensland for three months in 2021, when Boulder Boy Aaron, from the original series of Outback Opal Hunters told us he had a pup in mind for us. He'd seen us playing with every dog that visited the Bush Park and knew we were looking for our own doggo. After a serious discussion over price, we settled on a box of beer being a fair trade for a little black and tan kelpie, who Aaron explained was not for working cattle, he was 'placid, not timid'.

Two weeks later, Aaron pulled up at our hut and in the centre of the front seat was a hairy little bundle with the biggest bat ears and tan eyebrows with so much expression. As soon as I took him he cuddled over my shoulder and just looked at us like, yes, I'm yours.

We had already decided on his name, Reedy. How he came to get his name is another story, coming soon...
